Abstract

This study examines the representation of artificial intelligence in English-language media, focusing on a specific event: the creation of a unique dialect by Facebook Inc.'s artificial intelligence (AI) systems in 2017. Using content analysis and discourse analysis, this study examines journalistic articles to understand how the media approaches complex technical topics related to AI and whether there is a tendency toward sensationalism. The central hypothesis is that mainstream media often lack
in-depth analysis of technical AI events, opting instead for sensationalist coverage. The analysis revealed a tendency to sensationalize AI-related events, often lacking in-depth technical analysis. A prevalence of sensationalist and speculative narratives was identified. This pattern of coverage, more focused on attracting audiences through sensationalism, may negatively influence public understanding of artificial intelligence and its implications, highlighting the need for a more responsible and informative approach by journalists.
