Does attention produce value? – Criticism of the attention economy
Os equívocos da teoria do valor atenção
Abstract
From a critique of the attention economy, the objective of this paper is to investigate the relationship between attention and value, thus seeking to undo three mistakes in the so-called attention theory of value: attention values information; attention is a form of productive work; and the attention functionalized in advanced technical interfaces becomes a form of production. Without disregarding the problem of attention in modernity, it is proposed to understand it not from the point of view of value, but from the internalization of work characteristics. Based on bibliographic research, this article approaches references on political economy of communications, political economy of labor power, attention value theory and attention economy.
