Abstract

This paper presents the results of an analysis of public profiles of self-identified lesbian, bisexual and trans candidates in the 2020 municipal elections. On Instagram, we mapped 132 candidates, from 20 political parties, in 21 states. Data collection, via CrowdTangle, was carried out between September 27 and November 15, period equivalent to the beginning of the electoral campaign until the end of the first round, and resulted in 3,385 publications and 719,277,234 interactions (likes + comments). To analyze this data, we used content analysis (CA). The data were selected according to the presence of identity discourses, resulting in a final corpus of 359 publications. Among the results, we highlight that LBT candidacies are often crossed by identity markers of class, generation, religion and ethnic-racial belonging; these markers, especially of race and gender identity, are not named by white and cisgender women; representativeness is a central issue in the candidacies; and, finally, there is a proliferation of politically powerful identities seeking to occupy the public spaces of Brazilian politics.
