Selfies, hashtags and Abaporus:
Tarsila Popular and the participatory culture
Abstract
This article seeks to understand how the participatory culture and the phenomenon of selfies influenced the public record of the exhibition Tarsila Popular – the largest exhibition ever dedicated to the Brazilian Modernist artist, that happened between April 5th and July 28th, 2019, at MASP (Museum of Art of São Paulo Assis Chateaubriand). This paper analyzes 557 Instagram posts with the hashtag #tarsilapopular and its 258 captions, in the light of concepts such as subjectivity, surveillance, artist capitalism and the theory of the participatory culture.
