This article attempts to adjust the definition of performance in order to examine certain aspects of media and artistic practices developed in recent decades. With the intensification of some aspects of the society of the spectacle, significant changes are affecting subjectivity and sociability. These new lifestyles stimulate the construction of oneself under the gaze of others, promoting a generalization of performative gestures in an attempt to make oneself visible in order to “be somebody”. It should be inquired the role of authenticity in this situation, as a quality also claimed but which seems contradictory with the performatic spectacularization.
Keywords: performance, subjectivity, mass media, visibility.
