Abstract

With the enhancement of access to information and communication enabled by the internet, its use in the democratic process has been investigated in several respects. However, few studies investigate how, in fact, people and organizations use digital resources for political participation. This article discusses the Internet use by civil society organization, with emphasis on their use to actions in political participation. The methodological procedures involved reviewing the literature on the theses that permeate the work and interviews with 44 managers of organizations in Salvador-Bahia-Brazil. The results indicate that: (i) the main uses of the internet are related to maintaining constant contact with peers and also to search for information, (ii) the internet led to the renewal of some forms of political participation – as the petitions – and the emergence of new, as the cyber-activism.

Key words: internet, political participation, civil society organization.
