The broad agenda of the philosophy of science
Abstract
Philosophy of science can be initially understood as an attempt to specify the criteria, principles, concepts and procedures for testing and obtaining information that, at every moment of the development of a scientific discipline – while not being themselves submitted to discussion at this moment –, make this development possible, guide it, sustain it and also inevitably limit it. However, because of a requirement implicit in this same goal, philosophy of science must deal not only with the constitution and conceptual evolution of the various scientific disciplines, but also with aspects that have to do with the very insertion of knowledge in the social and even natural world.
