Treatment of timber effluent by photo-Fenton process
Abstract
Currently the timber industries are causing impact in the environment due to the biodegradable and non-toxic compounds contained in their effluents. There is a stage in the wood conservation that generates an effluent mainly composed of pentachlorophenol and tribromophenol. The conventional physico-chemical processes are inefficient for this effluent treatment, then a study was cannied out on this work to apply the photo-Fenton process. Because it has high destructive power of organic compounds, leading the contaminants to mineralization. The treatment of the effluent produced as a final result, a discoloration of 96%, a reduction of 96% of the BOD, a reduction around 88% of the COD and a reduction of 91% in total volatile solids. The ecotoxicological tests of the treated effluent showed the reduction of its toxicity.
Key words the timber industry, Advanced Oxidative Processes (AOP), treatment of effluent.Downloads
