Abstract

The theme of this paper is the Eco-Industrial Parks (EIPs) and the way they can be helpful in sustainable development, considering their constitution and how they can expand the sustainable development in their three pillars: economic, environmental and social. Three different approaches regarding the main themes and concepts were studied to better clarify what the Eco-Industrial Parks are and how they operate: biogeochemical cycles, industrial ecology and industrial symbiosis. For this study a bibliographic and documentary research was carried out complementing its design with a data collection from experts on the subject, through a questionnaire applied by email. At the end of this study we sought to present the elements for a proposal of implementation of EIPs in the State of Rio Grande do Sul. The elements involved in the development of EIPs are presented according to the following dimensions: planning and incentive; implantation; management; obstacles and resistance and also the elements that serve as a motivation for the implantation of the EIPs in the State of Rio Grande do Sul.

Key words: Eco-Industrial Parks, Industrial Ecology, Sustainable Development.
