Capitalism. Religion. Marxism. Liberalism.Abstract
Our aim in this article is to present capitalism as a contemporary religion, with money as God and Marxism and liberalism as prophetic strands. The text is divided in three movements. In the first part, we seek to define “religion” based on the fundamental concept of Drive, as defined by the psychoanalyst MD Magno. In the second part, based on the classic text by Walter Benjamin and the recently released “The enchantments of Mammon” by Eugene McCarragher, we seek to characterize capitalism as the religion of our time. And finally, analyzing passages from the works of Marx, Smith, Mises and Hayek, we try to demonstrate that Marxism and liberalism are prophetic strands of the capitalist religion.
