This study aims at understanding the effects of the treatment for acute leukemia in the family configuration and dynamics, from the Systemic Theory, specifically the Theory of Family Life Cycle. A descriptive, cross-sectional study, was conducted with a qualitative approach in the format of multiple cases study. In a public hospital in the south of Brazil, the cases of three male patients, aged 39, 22 and 19, who were, respectively, 3, 6 and 9 months in treatment for acute leukemia were selected. A semi-structured interview was conducted with the integrated construction of the family genogram. The analysis was made through an analytical strategy based on theoretical propositions, descriptive analytic strategy, and cross-case synthesis. The genogram data underwent qualitative analysis. In each case, the different moments in the individual and family life cycle were discussed. In the three cases, the family dynamics underwent changes in several areas: routine, reorganization, exchange of functions and responsibilities among members, particularly concerning household chores, child caring, leadership, decision-making and emotional support. The family configuration presented changes only in the family financial sustenance. In addition, the three participants perceived a significant increase in the proximity of the family relationship among each other and there was still a mobilization of new figures of the family support network. The adaptability of families is configured in all three cases as an important psychological and social factor of protection and health promotion.
