Minor Psychiatric Disorders and Associated Factors in Teachers of Private Education in Rio Grande do Sul/Brazil

The teaching profession tends to be carried out in unfavorable administrative, financial, ergonomic and social contexts. Such risks usually cause damage to teachers' health. This study aimed to verify the prevalence and factors associated with Minor Psychiatric Disorders (MPD) in teachers from private sector in Rio Grande do Sul/Brazil. It is a quantitative, descriptive and comparative research. Seven hundred and forty teachers from the state were participants in this study. They answered an online questionnaire containing descriptive questions (personal and work data), Work Context Assessment Scale and Self-Reporting Questionnaire. Results indicated a MPD’s prevalence of 55% in the studied group. The main characteristics associated to the MPD were: to work in early childhood education, to have a shorter workload, to work less in teaching and in more than one institution, and worse evaluation of the work context. Emphasis is placed on the need to expand public policies and health promotion services for these professionals.
