Abstract

AUCA magazine (Architecture, Urbanism, Construction, Art) was founded as an independent publication in 1965. It understood architecture as a creative force for the development of Chilean society. It was published continuously until 1986 and reached 51 issues. During its development, in concurrence with the policies of three different governments, we can distinguish three stages: one on the reform program (1965-1970), another one on creation and social participation (1970-1973) and a third one (1973-1986) on technocratic specialization, diversification and persistence. AUCA saw modern architecture as a key tool to reduce social gaps. It came out at a time when population growth caused a large housing shortage and inadequate infrastructure, generated functional overlaps and increased socio-urban segregation. The magazine highlighted the work of the state, so that urban housing shortage was a favourite subject that promoted social participation in architecture. It disseminated the latest works, recognizing that social and geographical constraints affected the architectural result. AUCA believed that architecture was finally able to comply with its social objective and humanistic content. The magazine was firstly in favour and then against the political circumstances of its time, showing its enthusiasm for being part of a process that aimed at radically transforming the institutional foundations, which required creative input and ethical commitment from the architects

Key words: architecture magazines, modern architecture, housing policies.
