Post-Occupancy Evaluation measures the performance of the built environment, contributing to the continuous improvement of design, use, operation, and maintenance processes of buildings, thereby promoting the development of housing that meets users' needs. Despite being widely recognized by researchers, the methodology is rarely used in the construction industry due to challenges in user participation. This research, through a systematic literature review, provides an overview of post-occupancy evaluations conducted in residential buildings with user involvement, analyzing over 1680 articles from four databases: Science Direct, Scopus, Web of Science, and Periódicos Capes. The 5W2H technique was used to extract and present the results. The findings indicate that the research focuses on evaluating performance criteria related to the habitability of innovative buildings, is rigid and researcher-centered, and that users do not perceive tangible benefits from participating. Based on the findings, it is recommended that future research place users at the center of the process and conduct more comprehensive evaluations of residential buildings.
