Abstract

The main purpose of this paper is to analyze the French influence on the architectural and open space scenery of residential condominiums built in the city of São Paulo from the 1990s on. The architecture, particularly when considered in its external aspects, and open spaces of part of these condominiums present characteristics of French buildings and gardens, in such a way that they seem to be totally dissociated from their environs in the landscape. The choice of a French style in architecture and landscape architecture as a model or a pattern may be explained by the role played by property developers, building constructors, and housing market agents, by the persistence of eclecticism in the city of São Paulo as well as of the obsession with everything European – which Gilberto Freyre observed regarding the 19th century – and also by the association established in the social imagination between French icons and symbols of status and power.

Key words: condominiums of São Paulo city, architectural and open space scenery, French infl uence.
