Teach me how to make lace and I’ll teach you how to project: The role of the designer in collaborative processes for innovation
Abstract
Designers are assuming new roles, which allow them to interact with organizations in collaborative processes, building innovative solutions. Designers’ attributions are similar to those of a mediator or facilitator allowing them to act strategically in the construction of sustainable futures. Through a case study analyzing the designer’s role within a group of artisans, we conclude that an understanding of how to stimulate dialogue and collaborative processes and the diagnosis of a group’s skills are considered desirable attributes for a designer. The designer also acts as an agent of change, widening a group’s cultural perception and modifying its projectual process.
Keywords: strategic design, sustainability, co-design, social innovation and handicraft.
