Abstract

The article evaluates the patrimonial restructuring of companies in Brazil from mergers and acquisitions (M&A) that occurred from 1990 to 1999. The analytical model used presupposes that the changes in the international and national economic environment are the main determinant factors of the process and they are responsible for the new business opportunities. In the research we conclude that the mergers and acquisitions achieved by trans-boundary companies were predominant, which makes evident the denationalizing process in the Brazilian economy, and its evolution is linked to the international movement. This movement becomes more intense in these cond half of the nineties, the period of major M&A intensity in Brazil and around the world.

Key words: mergers and acquisitions, economic opening, patrimonial restructuration.
