Associativism as a collective action strategy: the case of the cooperatives of “cartoneros” in Buenos Aires

This article analyzes the consolidation process of cooperatives of recovery and classification of solid waste as a distinctive actor in the recycling production chain in Buenos Aires. It discusses how the implementation of a collective strategy based on associative organizations has improved their working conditions and helped them to be integrated into the public system of urban hygiene. This process is presented in three different moments, starting with the creation of cooperatives and their interaction with the public policies related to their activity.
