Abstract

The occurrence of exotic species is among the greatest threats to biodiversity. In Brazil, the exotic primate species, Callithrix jacchus and Callithrix penicillata, stand out for their great adaptability. In this sense, the objective of this study was to assess the amount of time allocated to different activities of two mixed groups of C. jacchus and C. penicillata in forest and antropic areas at Ilha Grande, Angra dos Reis municipality, Rio de Janeiro State. We followed two mixed groups of Callithrix from May 2006 to February 2008. We used the method of instantaneous scan sampling to record the frequency of each one of the six behavioral categories used in this study. The time allocated among different activities differed significantly between the forest group and anthropic group. Among the dry and wet seasons the time allocated to each activity differed in the anthropic group, but not in the group of preserved forest. Our results indicated a great plasticity in the ecology of this species.
