The production of historiographical balances in Brazil: Between the political power and the discursive power (1990-2011)
Abstract
The production of historiographical balances, understood as evaluations/presentations of a group of historiographical texts referring to a particular subject, although being an old practice, is a topic that so far has not yet been systematically problematized by history theorists. In the present article we intend to make an analysis of some power relations that we believe are at the core of this mode of enunciation. Based on two functions of the historiographical balance, viz. balance as an expression of a political place and balance as a procedure designed to establish boundaries, we attempt to analyze some balances related to Brazil’s past of slavery that were produced between 1990 and 2011. This is a thematic and relevant perspective, since in this period the consolidation of graduate programs took place in Brazil, which promoted the perception of a new way to do history among the authors of period.
Keywords: historiographical balance, power relations, discourse, slavery.
