Abstract

This research aims to discuss the potential impacts of the concept of the “end of the history of art” upon museums and contemporary museology. We performed a review of conceptions of art object, museum, museology as well as other themes related to the museum fact in Brazilian art museums (São Paulo Museum of Art, Pinacotheca of São Paulo, Rio Museum of Art, among others) from the point of view of authors aligned with the aesthetic thinking that discuss the unfolding of contemporary art, art history and post-history art such as Hans Belting, Arthur Danto, Jacques Rancière, Vilém Flusser, mainly. The “crisis” we face nowadays involves the end of the concept of history in the world of art to which museums gradually respond by proposing possibilities of exhibitions that emphasize the dialogism peculiar to contemporary art instead of narrative experiences more in tune with old styles.

Keywords: museums, history of art, post-history, contemporary art, museology.
