Insertion, mobility and social destinies: The life stories of three Portuguese immigrants in the municipalities of Antonina and Paranaguá (Captaincy of São Paulo, 1784-1808)
Abstract
This article investigates the rooting and social mobility of three Portuguese immigrants in the towns of Antonina and Paranaguá between 1784 and 1808. In this context, the main purpose of this study is to produce knowledge about the ways of establishing social connections and the economic opportunities inherent to the Portuguese immigrants in coastal areas of southern Brazil in the second half of the 18th century. Thus, it highlights that, in the beginning of their insertion in the southern coast of São Paulo, it was operational for the young Portuguese to establish social ties with their enriched compatriots. It also points out that the aforementioned villages were not, in all cases, spaces for the reception of young immigrants. Rather, they were places for the resumption of the professional careers of Portuguese adults. The method of analysis employed in the study of these life stories is marked by two steps. First, the article identifies the social condition of the immigrants at the time of their marriages. Then it discusses their social and economic condition at the turn of the 19th century. The main sources used are marriage dispensations and lists of names of inhabitants.
Keywords: elites, Portuguese immigration, social hierarchies, southern Brazil.
