Antonio Vieira: Champion of real sovereignty
Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate that in the context of the War of Restoration (1640-1668), in which a group of the Portuguese nobility sided with the Spanish king Philip IV in his arduous struggle to regain Portugal, Father Antonio Vieira used all his talents as a politician, writer and speaker to advocate the sovereignty of the king of Portugal, D. John IV, positioning himself against the resistance of the members of the nobility to him, but also striving to strengthen the army of Portugal, since the latter was a fundamental instrument for the consolidation and maintenance of royal power. Al the intentions of a human group that acted in a time that was unfavorable to the Jesuits.
