Concentrated history: Victories and defeats of the Unidad Popular government
Abstract
This paper examines the central elements that marked the first half of Salvador Allende’s administration, the successes and failures which characterized the development of government policy already in its first year. So far, the initial “successes” and “failures” of the Unidad Popular government have not been studied in great detail. This is mainly due to the focus on electoral or political-institutional issues in most of the research on this topic. The exploration of the initial problems that Allende’s administration faced allows us to gain a better understanding of both the dynamics of the conflict that characterized the Unidad Popular at the institutional level and the limits that the government established for the “Chilean way to socialism”.
Key words: Allende, successes and defeats, institutionality.
