The ambiguities of the construction of the order in Brazil: slaves, police force and slave owners in the 1800’s
Abstract
This paper deals with the ambiguities of the Public Power in the construction of the order in eighteenth century Brazilian slavery society. The empirical base used here encompasses the police records signed by the Police Chief of the Espírito Santo Province, selected by a quinquennial sample of the years spanning from 1857 to 1888. The main objective is to assess the civil authorities’ task in maintaining peace and calmness in the “capixabas” communities. Under this perspective, the possibility of the police apparatus not being a central element in the equilibrium of the Brazilian slavery society is examined.
Key words: slavery, Imperial Brazil, Espírito Santo Province, police power.Downloads
