Public discussion and online social networks: The news commentary on Facebook

Abstract

This paper analyzes the arenas of discussion on Facebook pages of Brazilian newspapers. This approach recognizes the political commentary at Facebook as relevant in the contemporary public sphere for the discussion about issues of public importance. The sample consists of 1,164 comments published on the pages of Folha de S. Paulo, O Estado de S. Paulo and O Globo. The aim is to evaluate the quality of these arenas through the deliberative criteria of reciprocity, reason-giving, level of justification and respect, and to discuss structural elements of Facebook, the social appropriation and the public debate. In general, the networks of political conversations that surround the news work like amplifiers of diversity of arguments, demonstrating that in issues on which there is strong consensus there is a tendency for lower deliberation rates, and there is no reciprocity in almost half of the comments and more than 50% of posts have no justification.

Doutorando em Comunicação e Cultura Contemporâneas (PPGCCC) pela UFBA (Universidade Federal da Bahia), sob a orientação do professor Dr. Wilson da Silva Gomes, desenvolve pesquisa com bolsa do CNPq sobre as implicações democráticas das consultas públicas online. Atualmente faz estágio doutoral no MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology), especificamente no Center for Civic Media, sob a supervisão do professor Dr. Ethan Zuckerman. É membro do CEADD (Centro de Estudos Avançados em Democracia Digital) e do CID (Grupo de Pesquisa Comunicação, Internet e Democracia). Durante o mestrado, também pela UFBA, estudou arenas online de deliberação pública ao redor de conteúdos do jornalismo. Durante a graduação em Jornalismo foi bolsista de iniciação científica e do PET (Programa de Educação Tutorial). Entre os seus interesses atuais podem ser elencados: teoria democrática, democracia digital, consultas públicas online, Marco Civil da Internet e metodologias quantitativas que se aplicam aos estudos de comunicação e política.

Rodrigo Carreiro é doutorando em Comunicação e Cultura Contemporâneas pela UFBA e mestre pela mesma instituição, com dissertação sobre participação política local e internet. É membro do grupo de pesquisa Comunicação, Internet e Democracia e pesquisador do Centro de Estudos Avançados em Democracia Digital (CEADD), ambos da mesma Instituição. Seus interesses de pesquisa são democracia digital, sociedade civil e sites de redes sociais.
