Abstract

Assuming that love is a central element in soap operas, this paper analyzes the emergence of a particular type of affective bond, namely addictive relationships, in the story of a specific Brazilianshow, viz. Mulheres Apaixonadas. The article starts by discussing the central features of addictive relationships according to Giddens’definition, i.e. those in which love becomes the object of addition. It then analyzes two romantic plots in the above mentioned soap opera: 1) the relationship between Heloísa and Sérgio; and 2) the relationship between Raquel, Marcos and Fred. Additionally, the paper explores some opinions expressed by viewers about these stories, thus highlighting the way they interact with the narrative. The analysis reveals the role played by these opinions in denouncing the risks of pathological relationships, besides showing how the interaction between soap operas and social life may promote changes in the meaning of love.

Key words: soap opera, love, addictive relationships.
