Abstract

Modernity has produced a parasitefield in which men’s soul and dreams are transformed into material for a failed project. In opposition to such a system, the social and aesthetic movements of the 60’s and 70’s exposed the conflicts and crises that threaten the project of human emancipation of theenlightenment. In this complex picture, cinema was much more than an artistic or industrial activity: it was the main language for the experience of conflicts, generating debates for possible solutions. In “Deus e o diabo na terra do sol”, directed by the Brazilianfilm-maker Glauber Rocha in 1964, we see the use of primitivism, showing the reality beneath Brazil’s alleged civilization: its misery, despotism and profound inconsistencies and injustices.

Key words: civilization, enlightenment, barbarism, Deus e o diabo na terra do sol, Glauber Rocha.
