Abstract

Why did the act of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva of wearing a cap of the Movimento dos Trabalhadores Sem Terra – MST (Landless Movement) –, in an official meeting with its members, in July 2003, cause so much repercussion in the media? This article analyses, from Pierce’s triadic semiotic perspective, the semiotic effect of the sign, using news, commentaries and editorials of Brazilian media as empiric material. This paper shows that the generation of many meaning effects occurs because of its index-iconic dimension inside the symbolic dimension, for the judgment of the president’s behavior has to do with the general meaning given to MST, this one being recognized as a legitimate interlocutor or actor. As MST usually is shown in press as “marginal”, the government cordiality contrasted with this habitual meaning, giving a new meaning to the movement.

Keywords: semiotic, meaning effects, MST.
