Abstract

The objective of this work is to discuss the essentialist view of the disabled body, normally expressed through ideals of corporal normativity, based on the notions of narrative, anti-essentialism and anti-representationism of the American philosopher Richard Rorty (1931-2007). From this perspective, we list the work Memórias Póstumas de Brás Cubas by Machado de Assis, specifically in the narrative of the character Eugênia, which represents Machado's critique of a discriminatory social view of people with disabilities. Thus, we seek, as Rorty suggests, to bring the philosophical debate closer to literature and issues that are inserted in our community. To support this discussion, we will work with the following theoretical framework: Assis (2012), Rorty (1994; 1997; 1999; 2007; 2010) and Silva (2020).
