The present study, part of a larger investigation on remarriage with the ex-spouse, aims to investigate the forgiveness role in the marital relationship reconstruction in the marriage with the ex-spouse. A qualitative study was carriedout, in which 12 independent subjects, from Rio de Janeiro’s middle classespopulation, were interviewed - heterosexuals, married to the ex-spouse, withchildren in common. For the results analysis, the content analysis method was used,in its categorical aspect, and the category of repentance and forgiveness and its twosubcategories – forgiving is necessary and repenting makes a difference - were discussed. Findings indicate that forgiveness is fundamental to reconciliation with the ex-spouse, because it opens room to justify and relieve offenses, thus being a precursor to emotional well-being.
