A comparative genre-based study of research articles’ introductions written by English native/non native speakers

Resumen

This study aims to compare the Introduction section of a number of medical research articles written by non-native speakers of English (Iranian) and English native speakers in terms of their rhetorical structures. The articles published in ISI-indexed journals have been investigated using the models presented by Nwogu and Halliday. The models are related to Moves/Sub-moves and grammatical metaphors, respectively. Using statistical tests such as chi-square tests for goodness of fit and Mann-Whitney U tests, the authors have found that the Iranians used fewer Moves/Sub-moves and grammatical metaphors compared to native speakers. Awareness of this academic writing practice may contribute to pave the ground for Iranian researchers to publish their articles in world-known journals.

Mohammad Amin Mozaheb holds a Ph.D. in Applied Linguistics from Islamic Azad University, Tabriz Branch, Iran. He has published articles in a number of ISI-indexed and non-ISI-indexed journals. He is a member of the Young Researchers Club at his university. He is also a faculty member of the English Language Department at Imam Sadiq (A.S.) University. His major research interests include SFL, writing, genre studies and ESP.

Mahnaz Saeidi, Associate Professor in Applied Linguistics, Department of English, College of Persian Literature and Foreign Languages, Tabriz Branch, Islamic Azad University, Tabriz, Iran.

- Mahnaz Saeidi is an Associate Professor of Applied Linguistics at Islamic Azad University, Tabriz Branch, Iran. She has published nearly 40 articles in inter/national journals. She has also written several books relating to Applied Linguistics. She was selected as the best researcher of the university in 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2013. Her major research interests include SFL, genre studies, TBLT, multiple intelligences and focus on form.

Saeideh Ahangari, Assistant Professor in Applied Linguistics, Department of English, College of Persian Literature and Foreign Languages, Tabriz Branch, Islamic Azad University, Tabriz, Iran.

Saeideh Ahangari is an Assistant Professor of Applied Linguistics at Islamic Azad University, Tabriz Branch, Iran. She has published a number of articles in journals covering issues related to EFL/ESL and Applied linguistics. She has also presented papers in France, Greece, Canada, Spain, Malaysia, Turkey and Australia. Her research interests include SFL, testing and EFL.
