The intellectual property in the comics industry of Ceará

Abstract

Creative industries create economic and symbolic values and contribute to sustainable development, exploiting intellectual property and generating wealth through creativity. Among the variety of activities of these industries, the comics segment called the interest of the authors of these papers a subject of research, because it brings together great symbolic and ludic content as well as it is an important economic activity. Specifically, the question of the intellectual property on this economic segment was chosen as the main objective of this study because it is in the core of the business practices of symbolic goods’ producers, in general, and of the comics industry in particular. The methodological approach adopted is the qualitative analysis of the content of semi-structured interviews with sector’s representatives. The results indicate that the development of the comic segment depends on the artist’s greater consciousness of the importance of the intellectual property rights, of which depends the degree of their appropriation of cultural and symbolic value created by their creative work. It was also noticed that fitted public policy and the existence of intermediary agents are important factors to promote the development of these industries and promising trade relations between artists and entrepreneurs and to promote economic business, besides art.
